Shopping protections and benefits

The Venture X offers additional shopping protections and benefits to protect your purchases. Keep in mind you’ll need to charge your purchase to your card for the benefits to apply.

Maximizing your Venture X

Although you can offset the $395 annual fee easily, here are tips to maximize your Venture X’s value:

Earn the welcome bonus

The easiest way to quickly extract value from your new card is to make sure to earn the welcome bonus. With a minimum spending requirement of $4,000 in three months, you’ll need to average over $1,333 to stay on track. Once you’ve met the spending requirement, here are 7 ways to redeem the welcome bonus.

Use your card for purchases that don’t typically earn bonuses

The Venture X is a great catch-all card for any purchases that don’t fit nicely into a bonus category on another card. You’ll earn 2X miles on every purchase, which we value at around a 3.4 percent return. Not many cards offer a consistent return this high.

Because of this value and the strong redemption options, it’s my go-to card in these situations. Also, if you prefer a simplified approach to spending, you can feel comfortable knowing you’re getting a top return on all spending.

Use the travel portal

Capital One incentivizes you to use its travel portal with a $300 annual travel credit, so make sure you take advantage. It’s the easiest way to offset most of your annual fee. You can book flights, hotels and car rentals through the portal.

Because I prefer booking flights and hotels directly to use elite status benefits, I often use my credit for car rentals or when I fly with an airline that doesn’t incentivize me for booking directly, like a domestic flight when I’m outside of the U.S.

Combine your miles

If you have multiple Capital One cards, you can easily combine your miles online. In the “Rewards & Benefits” tab, select “Combine rewards” and choose the account to merge your miles. You can also call the number on the back of your Capital One card and transfer miles to any other cardholder that can earn miles.

There’s no limit or expiration on transfers: Just provide the name and card number of the person you want to transfer your miles to. This can be a convenient way to have a household work together to pool miles for a larger redemption.

Redeeming Capital One miles

Capital One miles don’t expire for the life of your account, nor do they have blackout dates. If you close your account, you will lose any rewards you haven’t redeemed. Capital One miles have many flexible uses, but the ideal redemption is for different types of travel.

Transferring to airline and hotel partners

Capital One has 19 transfer partners that offer outstanding flexibility for using your miles. Transferring to partners is the most valuable redemption method but does require more work than just redeeming for statement credit to cover your travel purchases to ensure good value. Bankrate’s valuations give Capital One miles a value of around 1.7 cents each when used with the right travel partner.

There’s a minimum of 1,000 miles required and miles transfer at a 1:1 ratio unless otherwise noted. Here are Capital One’s 16 airline partners, along with transfer ratios and times.

Bankrate insight

Capital One’s partners lack solid value for domestic airlines. The only domestic airline partner is JetBlue, and the transfer ratio is the worst among all issuers. The only partner unique to Capital One is Finnair Plus. All other airline partners can also receive points from another issuer. You should focus on using Capital One miles to assist with international redemptions, potentially combining points from multiple issuers to achieve aspirational bookings.

Capital One also has three hotel partners, none of which are unique. While airline partners will generally offer better value, Choice Privileges has the best value of the three hotel options when compared to ratios offered by other issuers.

Hotel partner Transfer ratio Transfer time
Accor Live Limitless 1,000:500 Up to 36 hours
Choice Privileges 1,000:1,000 Up to 24 hours
